Proletariat, Inc. is seeking a Character Art Lead to guide and manage a team of  Character Concept Artists and 3D Character Artists  in the design and creation of characters for Proletariat’s games. We are looking for someone who can uphold a creative vision, maintain quality and consistency of character art, and use their insights to develop concepts and give creative guidance.

In this position, you will be a source of inspiration for team members and able to set an example with your character creation expertise: mastery of tools, knowledge of game pipelines, and departmental production dependencies.

As a Lead, you must be highly organized and skilled at time management and delegation. As a manager, you must show strength in problem solving, communication with your team and other leads/stakeholders, and be a team morale booster.

Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with Studio Art Manager and Art Director in setting the artistic vision for character art and communicates this to the wider character art team.
  • Sets quality standards and instructs the team regarding new processes and software as dictated by project needs with up-to-date industry trends. 
  • Is the first asset review for technical and aesthetic checks of the character team’s work.
  • Manages a team of character concept artists and 3D character artists, including establishment of clear and consistent schedules in conjunction with producers.
  • Mentors, collaborates with, and helps to guide direct reports, and oversees their workloads.
  • Creates and maintains documentation for character-related processes.
  • Monitors and accounts for the needs across disciplines, such as rigging, VFX, and animation, to ensure character assets meet any technical requirements..
  • Interfaces with stakeholders  across the organization as a creative partner representing the character art team in high level presentations and strategy discussions.
  • Identifies potential problems in the art pipeline and works with other project leads to prevent them.
  • Collaborates with the Art Director and leads to understand and communicate the expectations for visual quality and best practices of in-game art with external/outsource teams.
  • Promotes strong independent problem-solving ability.
  • Interviews, hires, and trains new team members in collaboration with Recruitment team.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of professional experience in character art for games (also open to exceptional senior candidates with fewer years of professional experience)
  • A portfolio that showcases an innovative, appealing  approach to stylized character concepts, as well as experience in 3D modeling.
  • Has in-depth knowledge of technology, terminology, and techniques of game art development, including an awareness of design and programming considerations.
  • Great communication and leadership skills; awareness and competency in guiding creatives in the digital and social space.
  • Able to clearly articulate expectations, able to rally a team around one outcome and objective.
  • Displays consistent, professional demeanor at all times; reacts well under stressful situations.
  • Always pushes the art quality bar.
  • Is a positive force in company morale and a force of empowerment to team members.
  • Displays empathy, strong ethics, flexibility, confidence, self-awareness, and the ability to see all sides of complex situations.
  • Able to effectively communicate art issues to non-artists; exceptional presentation skills for both internal and external creative presentations.
  • Able to bring creativity and initiative to both preproduction and production concept tasks and adapt swiftly to new themes
  • Experience working with outsource partners. 
  • Good time management skills. Ability to provide oversight to multiple timelines, self-manage and meet deadlines; able to work unsupervised for long periods and able to supervise others.
  • Mature and trustworthy professional as the role may require exposure to confidential materials.
  • Experience using Unreal.
  • Expertise in software such as Maya, Photoshop, Zbrush, or equivalents.
  • Rigging and/or 3D Animation experience a plus.
